Preston LibDems try to limit snooping powers

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 28th Aug 2008

Given the chance to send a message to the Government over increased powers to snoop on residents, Preston City Council instead opted to reinforce its support for the measures.

LibDem Councillor Mark Jewell put forward a motion to restrict the occasions when Preston City Council can use the controversial Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (RIPA).

The motion calls for RIPA only to be used where there is "a substantial period of custody" and only if approved by the Chief Executive.

Councillor Mark Jewell, who is also the Liberal Democrat PPC for the next General Election, said, "I believe Britain has long distinguished itself by its liberal belief in the rights of the individual against the powers of the state. This government has given unprecedented snooping powers that affect each and every one of us. It is time that these powers are rolled back".
